Job Description

Job Purpose
The SHEQ Controller is responsible for ensuring compliance with all SHEQ regulations, policies and procedures within the stevedoring operations. This role involves monitoring, auditing and improving workplace safety, environmental sustainability and quality management systems to minimize risks and enhance workplace efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:
Safety and Health Compliance-
• Ensure compliance with occupational health and safety regulations as per the OSHACT
• Identify and mitigate risks
• Conduct safety inspections at vessel operations
• Investigate incidents, accidents, near misses and implement preventative and corrective measures.
• Provide Toolbox Talks specific to the operation
• Assess and coordinate training
• Enforce use of PPE
• Conduct regular emergency drills

Regulatory Compliance & Documentation
• Keep up to date with industry legislation, regulations and best practices
• Maintain SHEQ records, reports, crane, forklift, vehicle check sheets
• Liaise with regulatory bodies, port authorities and auditors regarding SHEQ matters
• Completion and submission of WCA documentation when faced with an IOD
• Quarterly gear inspections
• Gear certification and compliance

Key Skills and Competencies-
• Strong knowledge of SHEQ standards in the maritime industry
• Excellent risk assessment and incident investigation skills
• Strong report writing and documentation skill
• Conduct monthly H&S Meetings
• Ability to promote teamwork
• Ability to work to enforce and maintain safety standards
• Problem solving and decision making in a highly pressurized industry
• Ability to liaise with auditors

Qualifications & Experience

• Diploma in Occupational Health, Safety and Environment
• Certifications IN SHEQ e.g. NEBOSCH, SAMTRAC, ISO 9001 will be advantageous
• Minimum of 3- 5 years of experience in SHEQ roles in the maritime industry
• Proven experience working with regulatory bodies e.g. SAMSA, TNPA, Transnet, DOL
