Job Description

Role Summary
The Clinical Nurse Specialist focuses on the delivery of quality competent nursing care.
The incumbent acts as a clinical resource and leader in a particular clinical specialty,
performing functions at an advanced level competently and consistently. Sound and
contemporary knowledge of the area of specialty, together with an advanced
understanding of professional nursing, health care delivery and programme planning,
allows the CNS to fulfil the following primary roles: 1. Advanced clinical care 2.
Consultation as a source of expert knowledge 3. Clinical teaching of staff and learners
4. Research 5. Leadership
Inherent Requirements
Professional nurse registered with the South African Nursing Council.
 A post basic qualification in the area of specialty or evidence of competent
experience in that field.
 2 years’ experience in Theatre is essential.
 Critical eye, improvement (areas of improvement) and action plans including
involvement in Quality improvement processes
 Experience in basic Ward administration
Must demonstrate an advanced understanding of clinical governance and best practice
processes and policies and risk profiles in the speciality.
 Knowledge of Core standards, National Health Guidelines
 Required to be able to apply critical nursing skills and judgment across a range of
variable situations, and be able to anticipate problems.
 Must be able to influence, motivate, develop and lead a team to ensure quality and
productive clinical and professional nursing care.
 Must demonstrate an ability to contribute to and utilize research
 Strong mentorship skills
 Must demonstrate willingness to teach, and active participation in teaching and
sharing knowledge and skills.
