Job Description
Tax Department
Reports to: Tax Manager / Tax Director
Role Overview:
As a Tax Compliance Supervisor, you will assist in managing and supervising the tax department team, ensuring compliance with tax-related tasks and processes. You will advise staff on tax compliance matters, help resolve complex tax disputes, and manage the flow of work to ensure high-quality tax services. Your responsibilities will include overseeing tax audits, income tax and provisional tax returns, objections, appeals, and tax exemption applications, while ensuring compliance with all deadlines and liaising with SARS.
Key Responsibilities:
Supervise tax department staff and assist with training and delegation of tasks.
Support the Tax Manager in complex Income Tax Returns, provisional tax, and tax dispute resolutions.
Assist with the preparation and review of tax calculations and returns for clients (both corporate and individual).
Oversee communication and documentation with SARS, including assessments and disputes.
Manage and follow up on refunds, tax returns, and dispute resolutions with clients and SARS.
Guide the compliance officers on tax-related issues, including GreatSoft-related challenges.
Ensure compliance with the firm’s quality management systems, policies, and code of conduct.
Academic Qualifications & Experience:
Grade 12 with accounting as a subject
Relevant Tax or similar qualifications (5+ years of work experience in a tax environment)
Registered Tax Practitioner or eligible for registration
Strong knowledge of tax compliance and proven experience liaising with SARS
Skills & Competencies:
Strong communication, interpersonal, client service, and training skills
Leadership, delegation, and conflict resolution abilities
Excellent numeric and writing skills
Proficient in interpreting and applying the Income Tax Act, Tax Administration Act, and VAT Act
Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to work independently with minimal supervision
Experience with SARS appointments, tax calculations, and compliance processes
Key Tools & Software:
Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
GreatSoft
SARS E-Filing
LexisNexis (advantageous)
In-depth knowledge of the Income Tax Act, Tax Administration Act, and SARS dispute resolution process
Level of Independence:
Work independently under the guidance of the Tax Manager
Provide comprehensive support on all administrative tax-related tasks
